After 26 years in the corporate world, he’s joined a startup community. What it feels like?

Ján Šeliga, Managing Partner at 1 to 1 Administration

“Coming to Campus was a good choice, not only economically. All the young people here are passionate about everything, it’s so charming.”

Were you not doing what you do, what career path could we see you pursuing?

Probably something with sports.

If you could enter a time machine, what time period would you go to?

Exactly this time is perfect.

For many, the word “corporation” sends shivers down the spine. Now, try to imagine a person who’s spent 26 years working in one.

Whoever you are thinking of, it’s for sure very far off from Ján Šeliga. Brimming with humor and positive energy, Jan is the embodiment of the fact that you can switch your life up at any age.

Never too late to go your own way

What leads a person to make a radical change in their life after more than two decades?

In this case, the changes in the very company Jan had been working for were the reason. “The glass had overflowed,” he puts it. “I realized I didn’t want to get up every morning dreading my work.”

When you are in such a cursed loop, you don’t usually see the obvious until you look in from the outside.

“Only after I’d left, I saw how many options there were for me. That’s when I thought, ‘My God! Why haven't I done this sooner?!’”

Following that realization, 1 to 1 Administration was born in January 2019.

A company of 1 is never enough

Building on his extensive experience in accounting and payroll management, Jan decided to go into a business he knew well.

The difference being that this time, it was going to be on his own terms.

“In the corporation, I had my hands tied. In my own company, though I wanted to work on similar things, I’d do it my own way.” Using automatization and latest technologies to their fullest the company set out to offer comprehensive accounting services to clients.

And so it happened that 1 to 1 Administration would begin to grow.

Corporate experience meeting startup community

“In the beginning, I had no idea how big we were going to get. I knew one ex-colleague would join me but was there going to be just two of us for half a year? Was there going to be more?”

When you have a network as big as Jan has, you always have someone to go to for advice. Suffice to say, it didn’t take long for Campus to come up.

“A friend recommended me to check out Campus. The space is a little bigger than I needed initially, but it has a locked office, which I need for GDPR reasons. And the co-working provides the social aspect I wanted, too. So I took it.”

Jan’s colleagues were a little daunted by the prospect of joining a young startup community.

Today, he just laughs at that idea. “I told them that at least we would not be alone in an office, and we’d also rejuvenate with this community. On the other hand, we’d bring the experience with us.”

The pleasant kind of trouble

For a better or for worse, Jan’s business is booming, and 1 to 1 Administration is going to grow again.

The current team quartet is going to double in size to the count of eight. So in an amusing twist of events, the office that was initially too big is becoming a little cramped. But in Jan’s very own words, “that’s the nice kind of trouble I can have.”

Jan concludes by admitting that “coming to Campus was a good choice, not only economically. All the young people here are passionate about everything, it’s so charming.”
